What is the age limit for home health care?
There are no age limits for home health care. Some agencies specialize in age groups; we do not take care of children.
Will I still see my family doctor while receiving home care?
Yes, your physician is and essential team member, you will be seen in the office as he directs. The home health nurse makes frequent calls to the doctor informing him of your medical status, so he is aware of your health and directing your care all along the way.
How much time does a nurse or therapist spend in my home for a typical visit?
Each visit will vary in time, depending on your needs, some visits may be as short as 30 minutes and others may require a 90 minutes.
I live with my son and daughter in law; do they have to be present during the home health visits?
No, family members don’t need to be present during a visit, unless there is a special reason. Often the whole family wants to be present during planning/care visits since care is often a team approach.
I don’t like strangers coming into my home, taking over. How do you deal with this?
We inform and educate, you decide! Health care providers ask your permission, health decisions rest with you and your family. We respect your right to decide.
My mother needs in-depth care, what are some of the things your health agency will not do?
It is best to call the home health agency to ask this question, but here are some things we don’t do. We do not provide; transportation to and from your home, we do not stay in the home for extended hours of care (generally our visits last 30-90 minutes), we don’t clean the house (we will do a little tidying), we don’t fix a whole meal (we will help with a little snack).
Dad is so independent; sometimes we don’t feel his home or activities are safe. We can’t get him to act more safely?
Frequently people respond better to health care providers when they make suggestions about safety. Often people do not see why they have to change, but when informed why they are ok with it. For example, safety bars can be designed for security during the shower, throw rugs can be replace with something safer, steps in the front of the house can be fortified and medications can be organized safely. A good reason for change is presented, but the patient is still given the respect to decide.
I was taking oral antibiotics, but now my infection is worse, I think my doctor may say I have to go to the hospital for intravenous antibiotics. Can I receive them through Home Health Care?
Yes, most antibiotics, and many types of intravenous fluids can be administered in the home.
Does Wimberley Home Health perform Hospice care in the home?
No, we are not Hospice. Often we care for a patient until such time as a condition shows signs of severe deterioration, at that time the doctor is contacted and Hospice may be called for. We can help you find Hospice if you need them.
